      纪昀批评《聊斋志异》“一书而兼二体”主要有三个原因:第一,他追求文体的纯洁性,反对“一书兼二体”,即破体。第二,他认为文体愈古愈好,文体的发展愈趋愈下,汉魏六朝志怪简澹隽雅的文风是最高的艺术境界。侯方域等散文家以小说为古文辞,纪昀则以古文辞为小说。第三,清初倡扬程朱理学,乾嘉学派兴起,纪昀认为传奇才子之笔,描摹儿女情事,价值不大,而志怪著述之笔,有寓劝惩、广见闻、资考证之社会和知识功能。

      There are three reasons for Ji Yun’s criticism of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi. Firstly, he opposed “one book with two styles”, namely, broken style, due to his pursuit of pure style. Secondly, he believed that the older the style was, the better the article was. In his opinion, the development of literary style showed a worse trend, and literary style in the Han, Wei and Six Dynasties was the highest artistic realm because of their simplicity and elegance. Hou Fangyu and other essayists took novels as classical prose, while Ji Yun took classical prose as novels. Finally, the Neo-Confucianism of Cheng Zhu was carried forward and the Qian Jia School rose in the early Qing Dynasty. Ji Yun believed that the excellent writers’ depiction of love was of little value, but the writers who recorded fantastic stories held the responsibility of warning the society, enhancing the public’s knowledge, and demonstrating function for the society.
