      This paper discusses the relationship between the protagonist’s initiation and dark humor. The Invisible Man reaches full initiation when he, after being subjected to various forms of racism and taught many a lesson, recognizes the irony embedded in his grandfather’s deathbed instruction of dealing with racial oppression with tricks. Three essential ingredients of dark humor are explored at length, including surrealism, irony, and tricksterism. The dark humor tricksterism in the novel is perceived as a pioneer for the novels of postmodernist black humor, prevalent in the U.S. since the 1960s.
