Mou Zongsan’s criticism on Zhu Xi’s philosophy as “being heretic to the authentic Confucian philosophy” (Biezi weizong) is one of important premises, on which Mou not only criticizes Song ming Neo Confucianism, but also evaluates the tradition of Chinese thought from his own philosophical perspective. Mou does not mean to deny the significance of Zhu Xi’s philosophy, and his interpretation bestows special meaning upon Zhu Xi’s philosophy. Is Mou’s interpretation consistent with the reality of the history of Chinese philosophy? How does Mou establish the image of Zhu Xi from his perspective of hermeneutics? Why does Mou make such an interpretation? The new hermeneutic way of interpretation in this paper clarifies Zhu Xi’s position in the history of Chinese philosophy. Meanwhile, the interpretation serves as a key to Mou’s philosophical system, and can help people to re evaluate Mou’s unique contribution to the development of Chinese intellectual history. |
